Make money with your blog

Firstly there are two entirely different routes you can take with your blog to make money online, both methods take time and work to set up and both can be profitable, here I will briefly explain the difference between the two  methods

Make money online – the social blogger

The social blogger is anyone who creates a blog, publishes regular content and actively participates in the blogging community, they promote themselves (and their blog) through social networks, they gain a large readership and become known as an expert in their topic, a successful social blogger becomes  a personality, a good example of a successful social blogger is Darren Rowse (problogger)

Social blogging  is by far the most common way for bloggers to begin and is the traditional method of blogging – the aim of this type of blog is to gain a large readership through social networking and this type of blogger can make money from advertising, sponsorship and through affiliate sales and adsense.

Although social bloggers can make money from their blog this method requires a large following and making money depends on the success and popularity of the blogger, it is achievable but it also requires a constant internet presence and commitment to your blog. However, with the right information you can become a successfull social blogger and earn an income from your blog. Unfortunately this does not happen very often and many bloggers either give up when they fail to make money or lose interest in their blog.

Make Money Online – The Niche Blogger

Niche blogs are blogs that are focused on a single topic and the aim of a niche blogger is not to gain a large readership of other bloggers but to gain targeted traffic from search engines in order to make money from their blog, much like a website. Niche bloggers may or may not participate in the blogging community but their aim is to attract traffic and sales, not readers and they make money using the same methods as the social blogger, through adsense, affiliate sales and advertising.

Niche bloggers are not (often) online personalities, they have a product or service etc that they want to promote and do so with their blogs. Many successful niche blogs have very little or no information about the author.

Setting up a niche blog to make money online also requires time and effort but unlike the social blogger, the niche blogger focuses on search engine optimization, backlinks and off site promotion to increase their blogs ranking in search engines. The goal of a niche blog is to gain targeted traffic, traffic that is looking for the information/product they provide in their blog, niche blogs are monetized according to their content, if they are selling a product the blog will feature the product and ranking well in the search engines for their desired keyword (the term related to their product) delivers the traffic that is interested in purchasing the product.

The difference between the niche blogger and the social blogger is the commitment to their blogs, a social blogger, once successful, must continue to promote their blog, post often and keep a social presence online, without doing these things a social blogs traffic will fall, whereas a successful niche blog that is highly ranked for their keywords and recieves targeted daily traffic from search engines need only post rarely, search engines will continue to send targeted traffic to their blog and this will continue to make the niche blogger  money as long as they are ranked highly.

But there are exceptions! It is possible to make money online with both methods, with the combination of a profitable niche, a blog that is properly optimized for search engines and one that contains valuable content you can gain targeted traffic, high rankings in the serps and a large following.
